Bio
Tanya is a Toronto-based spoken word artist who facilitates poetry and writing workshops for youth and adults. A long-time activist, her work is motivated by community building, reflection and dialogue for positive social change. Tanya loves to share her work. She's been inspired by slams and festivals in Vancouver, Ottawa, Kingston, Montreal, Detroit, Madison, Columbus and St. Paul/Minneapolis. Her first book, Piecing It Together, was published in 2009 by Thee Hellbox Press, a printing press of innovative hand-made books. Tanya is an active member of a community of poets; as a Toronto Poetry Project collective member, as an Ontario Arts Council artist educator and as a facilitator for poets.ca. -

Influences
Many. A lot. Perhaps you. Definitely influenced by Serena Ryder, Ani Difranco, Hawksley Workman, the communities I'm a part of and perhaps too many poets to name... I breathe Buddy Wakefield's work on some days. Andrea Gibson's writing helps me remember a strength that's rad, queer, honest and vulnerable. Robbie Q and Rachel McKibbens have cracked my heart open with their performances. -
Sounds Like
“What I see coming through this poem, and indeed every poem, is Tanya’s courage to face some difficult but life altering situations… Tanya is reassuring us to be steadfast and keep moving forward despite our inadequacies or imperfections” - Hugh Barclay, publisher, Thee Hellbox Press.
