Playing raw rock & roll boogie with undercurrents of blues and country and lyrics that spin tales of debauched good times, Denney and the Jets are the creation of singer and guitarist Chris Denney, who was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee and claims to have developed an impressive appetite for tobacco, marijuana, and pain pills (the latter swiped from his grandmother) by the time he was 13 years old.
In 2008, Denney began turning the stories of his wild life into songs, and in 2009 he formed the first edition of Denney and the Jets, recruiting Wes Traylor on bass, Jake Orrall on guitar, and Jamin Orrall on drums. Soon Traylor left to work with other bands, most notably Natural Child, and the Orrall brothers moved on to their group JEFF the Brotherhood, so Denney assembled a new edition of the Jets, with Joey Scala on bass and vocals, Joey's brother Evan Scala on drums, and Sean Cotton on lead guitar and vocals. (Daniel Pujol, later of Pujol, was also briefly a member of the group.) JEFF the Brotherhood's label Infinity Cat Records issued a limited-edition cassette and a 7" single from Denney and the Jets before the band partnered with Limited Fanfare Records to release a self-titled EP in 2012. In 2014, Denney and the Jets found a new home at Burger Records, and released their first full-length album, Mexican Coke, which featured keyboard and sax work from Ric Alessio. ~ Mark Deming
