The industry’s freshest talent, Krystal Mittoo, may be new to the scene but is no stranger to music. Being the daughter of renowned musicians Jackie Mittoo and Carol Brown, while honing her craft as both a skilled pianist and vocalist from the early age of 14; Krystal has been exposed to music her entire life and will stop at nothing in pursuit of her lifelong passion. Krystal’s father, the late Jackie Mittoo, was the musical composer behind many smash hits of the 90s, such as UB40’s Red Red Wine and Lilly Allen’s Smile. No surprise that Krystal’s unequivocal ear for music is a rare talent taken after her father. Having reggae deep-rooted in her family, Krystal’s personal flair for R&B that she projects so profoundly can be comparable to artists such as Aaliyah, Alicia Keys, Amerie and Destiny’s Child. Throughout Krystal’s high school years, she began to perform at community events, namely the Nise Fashion Show, taking place at the Humber College Assembly Hall in Etobicoke. In 2008, Krystal’s brother Kelvin aka Montreal’s DJ Kane, connected her with R&B artist, Michie Mee; where they collaborated and recorded ‘Save me,’ which was entirely self-written, alongside with all her other recordings. In 2009, Nu Money Entertainment—an up-and-coming rap group—approached Krystal to be featured on their track, ‘Just Like a Star.’ Through such preliminary stages in Krystal’s musical career, she began to see the powerful impact music has to express one’s self in a relatable way. She also sees the importance in working with emerging artists, as they are continuously exploring new boundaries and intertwining genres in a subversive way—which Krystal continuously incorporates through her own creativity. It was after entering the ‘Explore Talent Music Contest,’ ranking an impressive 7.2/10 rating from 34,000 listeners, that she was noticed my an A&R executive and urged to submit an EP. Krystal is currently in studio working towards completing her debut untitled album.
