Leba Hibbert

Bio:

Singer-Songwriter Leba Hibbert has toured the world with legendary reggae acts including Sly and Robbie, and Toots and The Maytals. She has performed with artists around the globe, from the US and Brazil, to France, and even Japan where she recorded the Japanese National Anthem, for a group called Ackee and Saltfish, singing in Japanese.

For almost twenty years now Leba has been the foundation of Toots and The Maytals' backing vocals. She was awarded a grammy for her performance on the Toots and The Maytals 2005 Grammy winning album, True Love.

Leba recorded and published a song at the legendary Majestic Records of Nashville, Tennessee after entering a songwriting competition. When she has time she writes music for herself and other artists.

In 1989, her immense vocal talents caught the ears of mega-reggae producers Sly and Robbie. They recorded a series of cover songs with her and her older sister Melanie for a record deal with Chris Blackwell’s Mango label. One of the songs titled Ooh La La, topped the British Black Echo charts twice, while another, Never Get To Heaven, charted well enough to help seal the deal with Mango.

Leba has maintained her relations with the Taxi Label, performing background vocals on many of the label’s hits while contributing lead vocals on two songs for Sly and Robbie’s 1999 Grammy award-winning album titled Friends.

In between touring and recording commitments, Leba makes time to perform with Kingston Ladies, a trio that combines the talents of Leba, Pam Hall and Keisha Patterson to create a sound reminiscent of the acclaimed I Threes. They recorded an album for French reggae producer Pierre Simone in late 2003, and did promotional tours in France in 2004 and 2005. The group also performed with exceptional reviews at the revived Jamaican Reggae Sunsplash in August 2006.

Leba is currently working on her debut solo album with producer Sly Dunbar. The album will released on the Taxi Label and will include songs written by Leba, as well as three cover songs.

In addition to the work they do with Toots, The Maytals Band is working on a solo album, featuring Leba on both lead and backing vocals.

With all these commitments, Leba still makes time for her son CJ, a very special person in her life, who keeps her grounded and continually inspires her. Leba’s soulful voice has the same unassailable conviction of her father’s that continues to bring a sound to the Jamaican music scene that moves and captivates all who listen.
