    MESSIER 88
Charles Messier described the 88th entry in his 18th century catalog of Nebulae and Star Clusters as a spiral nebula without stars. Of course the gorgeous M88 is now understood to be a galaxy full of stars, gas, and dust, not unlike our own Milky Way. In fact, M88 is one of the brightest galaxies in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster some 50 million light-years away. M88's beautiful spiral arms are easy to trace in this colorful cosmic portait. The arms are lined with young blue star clusters, pink star-forming regions, and obscuring dust lanes extending from a yellowish core dominated by an older population of stars. Spiral galaxy M88 spans over 100,000 light-years.

    SATURN AFTER EQUINOX
The other side of Saturn's ring plane is now directly illuminated by the Sun. For the previous 15 years, the southern side of Saturn and its rings were directly illuminated, but since Saturn's equinox in August, the orientation has reversed. Pictured above last month, the robotic Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn has captured the giant planet and its majestic rings soon after equinox. Imaged from nearly behind, Saturn and its moon Tethys each show a crescent phase to Cassini that is not visible from Earth. As the rings continue to point nearly toward the Sun, only a thin shadow of Saturn's rings is visible across the center of the planet. Close inspection of Saturn's rings, however, shows superposed bright features identified as spokes that are thought to be groups of very small electrically charged ice particles. Understanding the nature and dynamics of spokes is not fully understood and remains a topic of research.

    STATUESKY
    STARS OVER EASTER ISLAND
Why were the statues on Easter Island built? No one is sure. What is sure is that over 800 large stone statues exist there. The Easter Island statues, stand, on the average, over twice as tall as a person and have over 200 times as much mass. Few specifics are known about the history or meaning of the unusual statues, but many believe that they were created about 500 years ago in the images of local leaders of a lost civilization. Pictured above, a large stone statue appears to ponder the distant Large Magellanic Cloud before a cloudy sky that features the bright stars Canopus and Sirius.

    REFLECTIONS ON THE 1970s
The 1970s are sometimes ignored by astronomers. In particular, this beautiful grouping of reflection nebulae in Orion - NGC 1977, NGC 1975, and NGC 1973 - are usually overlooked in favor of the substantial glow from the nearby stellar nursery better known as the Orion Nebula. Found along Orion's sword just north of the bright Orion Nebula complex, these reflection nebulae are also associated with Orion's giant molecular cloud about 1,500 light-years away, but are dominated by the characteristic blue color of interstellar dust reflecting light from hot young stars. North is down in this sharp color telescopic image from New South Wales, Australia, so the more familiar Orion Nebula borders the top of the view. NGC 1977 stretches across the field just above center, separated from NGC 1973 (below left) and NGC 1975 (below right) by darker regions of obscuring dust. Many northern hemisphere observers claim to see the general shape of a running man in the cosmic dust cloud but, of course, they're looking at the view upside down.

Interests

  • General

Orbiting, dust storms, making horny astrologers get pissed off and lose their car keys, more dust storms.
  • Heroes

The Sun, Jupiter, the other planets (including that sparkly blue marble over there).

Blurbs

About me:

I'm your home planet's cold and dusty little brother. My "day" is a bit under 40 minutes longer than yours. You've dropped a couple interesting bouncy/rovery things down onto me and flown around me a bit, but so far you just seem like a curious lot.

If you tried to breathe here without some help, you'd be screwed, I'm afraid. What little atmosphere I do have is mostly Carbon Dioxide with a touch of Nitrogen and a few other trace elements. My gravity is only about 1/3 of yours so you could all pogo and/or "Jump up Jump up and get down." to your hearts content.... provided you could find a way to breathe, of course.

A SPECIAL NOTE TO OUR ASTROLOGER FRIENDS: Look, I love the attention and all, but it's not always my fault when you get pissed off at your Sig. O, or your co-workers, or your car breaks down, or wars start between your nations, or you do (or don't) end up in bed with someone you hardly know, or you bounce checks, get hotheaded, etc. I hate to be the one to say it, but it might just be that some of you are short-tempered, horny, and don't maintain your vehicle or your check ledger. You can't possibly blame that all on me.

Can't we just be friends?

TO THE ASTRONOMERS: Keep up the good work.

..I Used This Right Here To Pimp Out My Profile..

Who I'd like to meet:

Other planets, Sol, humans, giant squid, eccentric photographers, non-suicidal asteroids with good aim, etc.
