  • Bio

SoHoly HeadCase is an inventive hybridization of hypnotic, electronic, pop music with advanced world, totemic beats, synthesized together between space and time. The personal project of Winnipeg artist/ musician, Robert G. Menard is carving out a new vehicle for transcendental music lovers. Soholy HeadCase emerged in the dark shadows of Menard's apartment in the cold winter of 2005. Locked away under headphone coves and countless hours of blended repetition, the formula was found. Menard uses electronics, record scratch loops, found, gathered and honed sounds along with his guitars, synth, keyboards and vocals to create and bring his music alive. The outcome is a very unique style of tribal movements with techno/ disco, post/math/ pop rock and ambient subtleties. He has become known for his strange and beautiful sense of time signatures and melodies within his writing. Most notably recognized for playing in the band Absent Sound, which he founded back in 1995 as well as creating the 20 Guitar Circular Wall of Angelic Sound, and co-creating the ElementSircus Solstice Festivals. He has just released a brand new digital EP entitled , Mass Madness!!! You Maniacs!!!. You can pick it up for free at http://www.soholyheadcase.bandcamp.com You will have also found him playing in other bands such as Origins, Bull In A China Shop, HellinaCopter, Room 237, and Medicine Missile. .... .... MEDIA.... 2008-09-04 UPTOWN MAG, WINNIPEG.. Music.. Head in the clouds.. Absent Sound's Rob Menard lets his side project, SoHoly HeadCase, have some time to shine.. Don Beat.. Head in the clouds"SoHoly HeadCase was born on a fiber of a mind filament in a brainwave within a dream last summer," says Absent Sound member Rob Menard about his current heads 'n tales-spinning solo project... "I saw myself onstage playing very peculiar music with none other than my electronic goodies, which had spirits of their own, accompanying me," Menard continues. "I thought I'd better start out trying to recreate the sounds I heard in the dream. I found myself bopping and wiggling with headphones, and guitar strapped on, alone in my apartment. It had begun.".. Menard has played several solo SoHoly shows since. He says his solo music differs from Absent Sound tunes because it's "very focused on more up-beat rhythms and trance-inducing electronic beats, sounding at times as though three drummers are playing a tripped-out math-rock disco. The music has an awake nature to it, it gets people up and moving more so than the short, ambient, sedated parts.".. U street beaters can check SoHoly HeadCase at an all-ages head spinner at Ragpickers Theatre (second floor, 220 McDermot Ave.) at 9 p.m. on Sept. 4 with National Monument and What Seas, What Shores from Windsor, Ont... National Monument is also scheduled to play the Sherbrook Street Festival on Sept. 6 (see events listings)... Menard says he's recording a fleshed-out SoHoly album called Mass Madness, You Maniacs with (A-Sound engineer of sound) Jordan Brown and Chris Nelson (Spiral Spectacular) which is scheduled for a fall release on the 2-Ply Collective Record Label... "It's a label created by friends from Ham, HellinaCopter, Spiral Spectacular, Absent Sound and Room 237 in the mid-'90s," Menard says of the recently resurrected imprint... No word on which HeadCase trax will be on the upcoming album, but Menard says you will most likely hear The Swirl of Electric Wind and We're All Lining Up, at the gig... "My favourite to play is It's a Real Deal to Steal," Menard admits. "It's one that sounds like there are three drummers playing, and there's lots of neat changes. It's pretty tribal sounding. Rest Your Head is the most Absent Sound-y. It has lots of looping guitar and violins going, it is quite triumphant, and tugs at your heart.".. The current AS album, The Gathering of the Clan Mothers, is a local underground classic of sorts. Rather than rest on that fact, do the expected tour, and the rest of the typical associated stuff, the A-Sound collective is presently very attune to other sounds in their heads. The Absent Sound is at a bizarre crossroads in its weird Winnipeg-based career as soft-noise specialists. A-Sound collaborator Dave Fort has his solo project Twin, Menard has HeadCase, and other members are in other bands - yet their chief project, Absent Sound, just keeps getting better, methinks due to the amount of work that they all put into everything that they do. Call it symptoms of synergy if U want - it's all messed up and sounds pretty damn fine... Uh, in case you were wondering what the hell Menard is on the cuff about with this solo moniker, he has this to say: "A SoHoly HeadCase to me is one of those bright, brilliant and crazy people who sometimes can't grasp onto society's grip, so they end up with their head in the clouds without a care. I kinda relate to that, so I thought it would make a good name for the character I am playing. At the last ElementSircus I was escorted onto stage cuffed by two hospital workers which allowed me to play some music for an outing. It was real fun."...... 2009-01-08 UPTOWN MAG, WINNIPEG.. The sweet beats of 2009.. Don Beat looks into the new local treats we can expect in the coming months.. Don Beat.. Ahhh the future. And after reading thru 50-some odd weeks of S-Beat, or maybe just casually sifting 'n shifting thru a column or three, U fine local-entertainment-deserving streetists know that we're set for what might be a record number of local new releases in 2009... Almost every artist I interviewed over the year told me they were either working on writing the basis for a new recording project or two, or they said they were just finishing up something for release in the new year. Here's a surface-scratching tastebud-teaser of some of the engaging aural items U can expect from a super sampling of our top local acts in 2009:.. On the experimental side of the beat street, U streetists can expect a thought-inducing album from Rob Menard (Absent Sound), aka SoHoly HeadCase, titled Mass Madness, You Maniacs. Menard says he's joined by Jordan Brown (A-Sound audio engineer) and Chris Nelson (Spiral Spectacular) on the record... The alb is scheduled for a fall release on the 2-Ply Collective Record Label. Menard has this to say of the recently resurrected 2-Ply: "It's a label created by friends from Ham, HellinaCopter, Spiral Spectacular, Absent Sound and Room 237 in the mid-'90s.".. About HeadCase ,Menard says:.. "My favourite to play is It's a Real Deal to Steal. It's one that sounds like there are three drummers playing, and there's lots of neat changes. It's pretty tribal sounding. Rest Your Head is the most Absent Sound-y. It has lots of looping guitar and violins going, it is quite triumphant, and tugs at your heart.".. The 2-Ply label has also scheduled a release featuring the curated 20 Guitar Wall of Angelic Sound project, and a much-anticipated compilation album for release in 2009. The 2-Ply Collective Compilation will include trax by founding muthas Ham, HellinaCopter & A-Sound, as well as offerings from the prolific Mahogany Frog, Dead Letters, HeadCase, Twin and National Monument and more. Check 2-Ply at MySpace for more info.
