.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..Oli Arlotto - tenor sax......>..French born, living in London for 11 years, Oli is one of the most exciting and versatile horn players on the British jazz scene with a rich and energetic sound. He has toured in Europe with different French jazz bands including Vincent Arnaldi's band. In 1998 he formed the 5 piece jazz-rock band 804d, touring nationwide and in London. Since then Oli has played with blues artists like Canadian guitarist/singer Drew Barron (ex Buddy Miles' band) and played all over the UK with many excellent jazz musicians and his own quartet....... ..Mirko Cisilino - trumpet......>..Mirko started playing trumpet in the school band at 11 years old. After 4 years in the Conservatory studying classical music in Udine, Italy, he spent a year in Klagenfurt, Austria, with Prof. Lee Harper and the following year entered the Conservatory of Amsterdam where he stayed for 5 months. Back in Italy he studied with Prof. J Kyle Gregory in Verona. He recently moved to London and at the moment he's part of the U.T.Gandhi's Vertical Invaders and the Collective White 5et....... ..Michael Searl- drums......>..Originally inspired by a Phil Collins concert on TV Michael took up the drums while at senior school and learnt to play by hitting everything in sight. For many years his kit consisted of Argos shopping catalogues, a rubber pad, a wooden chest, and the floor. He has a love of ALL kinds of music - having learnt to play by jamming with whatever was on the radio, or along with old tapes from family members...etc. Currently very busy on the London gig scene, Michael is feeling very Blessed...and in the words of his fellow Jazzaholic, Sir Lance Rose: "I just like it when it makes me wanna Dance"....... ..Michele Montolli - bass......>..Born in Verona in 1986. At 8 years old he took up classical violin at the Conservatory in Verona. In his early teens he switched to electric bass and started to play in several local bands (rock, blues, reggae). At the age of 17 he studied classical double bass at the Conservatory in Verona, later taking up jazz double bass in Austria at the University for Music in Graz ( Wayne Darling's class), graduating in 2009. He took part in workshops led by jazz artists such as Adam Nussbaum, Ron McClur, Billy Hart, Dave Liebman, Don Menza, Klaus Reible, and Siegi Feigl. He has performed at the Verona Jazz Festival in 2006 and at many others around Europe and Balkan Penisula. Currently he's based in London and involved in world music and jazz projects - Alejandro & the Magic Tombolinos, Don Menza Italian Quintet, Curiòrkestra. He has one album release for Azzurra Music with Baobab Ensemble – (UZUBUZU)....... ..Joe Bickerstaff - keyboards......>..Joe started on violin aged 6 and struggled for five years to keep the damn thing in tune. And then at 11 discovered the piano which he taught himself, without the constraints of tutorship or preconception. The blues was where he started and remains in his very fibre. Branching out into jazz, jazz funk and cocktail to make a living, Joe has travelled the world through music, but is now firmly settled in North London. Glastonbury, Hyatt Singapore, Jumeriah Beach Hotel Dubai and the Langham, Dorchester, Hilton, Vortex and Grosvenor in London are semi-regular venues. All very grand, but Joe's heart remains with the blues and the opportunity to play them with Strayhorn is a true homecoming....... ..Paul Ferreira - vocals, guitar......>..Paul began playing the blues in the early 1970s. Largely self taught, he has been making music and writing songs for his own interest and enjoyment ever since. Strayhorn began as a solo project, made possible by affordable multi-track home recording, with the distant dream of finding the right people to play with. Over the last five years Paul has begun to play in public, mostly at Ponto Sete, a small jazz and blues bar in Portugal, with a few outings in London (12 Bar Club, Green Note). This summer, after accepting an invitation from an old friend, Algerian percussionist and band leader Seddik Zebiri, to his Sunday jam at Charlie Wright's in Hoxton, he was fortunate enough to connect with the fine jazz musicians listed above who share his love of the blues.... .. .... ..The countless black American musicians who created and nurtured the genre, made their music out of their own sorrows and joys, and the many injustices inflicted upon them and their people. In present circumstances and times we can aim to expand and reinterpret the territory covered by the music, while respecting its roots and remaining within its general compass. Most of us in the west are no longer working on the killing floor but there is still plenty to sing the blues about..... .. ..Gasoline.... ..Based on the central riff and opening lines of I Asked For Water by Howling Wolf, the words might come from a conscript soldier in a far off land whose officers have sent gasoline instead of water, leaving him stranded. At a wider level it speaks of the gulf between real human needs and what the globalised corporate machine seeks to provide us with..... .. ..My Baby Don't Cry No More.... ..Bayou blues based on two themes that lay sleeping for over twenty years..... .. ..Shilling.... ..Slow jazz-blues in G..... .. ..Can't Beat The Kid.... ..Cover of an Eddie Hinton composition that Paul first heard on John Hammond's 1975 album of the same name..... .. .. Gillett Street Blues.... ..An observation of street life in a poor district of London that strays into a commentary on the misadventures and hypocrisy of the Bush and Blair administrations in the Middle East..... .. .. .. .."The blues are fantastically paradoxical and, by all logical and historical odds, they ought not to have come into being... ..I'm absolutely certain that no one predicted their advent".... .. ..Richard Wright: from the foreword to Paul Oliver's Blues Fell This Morning.... ..Paris 1959..... .. ..

  • John Lennon Tribute

Well, it's almost the weekend and I'm stepping out. It's time to put on my space suit and I got to look my best. Just for a while .... ain't been out for days. ;-) It's always a constant remembrance and embrace of John Lennon, who left his very own extraordinary mark in music history. A legendary/iconic musical figure of the modern pop/rock era.

..

Filippo Giangrande - drums

>Italian, 29, with a love and passion for groove based music and a strong identity on the drums. Taking up piano at 9, Filippo was involved in music as a teenager, both as a singer and percussionist until his university years when he started focusing exclusively on drums. He studied in Tuscany then in the Sicily Modern Music Institute and has recently moved to London playing funk, soul, hip hop, blues and jazz.

Michele Montolli - bass

>Born in Verona in 1986. At 8 years old he took up classical violin at the Conservatory in Verona. The countless black American musicians who created and nurtured the genre, made their music out of their own sorrows and joys, and the many injustices inflicted upon them and their people. In present circumstances and times we can aim to expand and reinterpret the territory covered by the music, while respecting its roots and remaining within its general compass. Most of us in the west are no longer working on the killing floor but there is still plenty to sing the blues about.

Gasoline
Based on the central riff and opening lines of I Asked For Water by Howling Wolf, the words might come from a conscript soldier in a far off land whose officers have sent gasoline instead of water, leaving him stranded. At a wider level it speaks of the gulf between real human needs and what the globalised corporate machine seeks to provide us with.

My Baby Don't Cry No More
Bayou blues based on two themes that lay sleeping for over twenty years.

Shilling
Slow jazz-blues in G.

Can't Beat The Kid
Cover of an Eddie Hinton composition that Paul first heard on John Hammond's 1975 album of the same name.

Gillett Street Blues
An observation of street life in a poor district of London that strays into a commentary on the misadventures and hypocrisy of the Bush and Blair administrations in the Middle East.

"The blues are fantastically paradoxical and, by all logical and historical odds, they ought not to have come into being. I'm absolutely certain that no one predicted their advent"
