Courtney Love sued over Twitter comments...again
by Emily Zemler May 31, 2011 at 11:18 AM.

.
Courtney Love’s Twitter account may be defunct, but it’s still getting her into trouble. For the second time, the Hole singer has been sued over her comments on the social media site.
.
Rhonda Holmes, a U.S. attorney, filed a lawsuit against Love after the musician claimed Holmes had been “bought off.” Holmes was hired by Love to represent her and to investigate whether money had been stolen from the estate of her late husband, Kurt Cobain, last year. Holmes was later fired by the singer six months after Love had hired her firm. Love then tweeted, “I was fucking devastated when Rhonda J Holmes Esq of San Diego was bought off.” Holmes is suing for defamation, saying her career was damaged following the Twitter comment, which she says is false.
.
This is the second instance of Love’s Twitter comments resulting in a lawsuit for defamation. In the first suit, Love was ordered to pay a whopping $430,000 settlement to fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir.

Coachella expands to two weekends for 2012
by Emily Zemler May 31, 2011 at 10:59 AM.

.
Do you like Coachella? Do you want to go to the exact same festival two weekends in a row, braving the 100-degree heat and paying tons of money for water while feeling sad that you couldn’t afford to buy your way into VIP with David Hasselhoff? Well, good news: Coachella will expand to two weekends next year, each with the same lineup.
.
Festival promoters released a statement today, announcing that Coachella 2012 will take place April 13-15 AND April 20-22 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, CA. “In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, COACHELLA 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends, ,” the promoters wrote. “We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people. We know many of you were unable to attend this year’s festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.”

Label signings: Mayer Hawthorne and more
by Emily Zemler May 30, 2011 at 7:51 PM.

.
Find out which of your favorite bands have signed on the dotted line with their very own record deal. And be sure to check back every weekend to find out which bands inked deals in the past week.
.
–Mayer Hawthorne has joined the roster of major label, Universal Republic. Hawthorne’s second album, How Do You Do, will be released via the label in the fall, with a new single, “A Long Time,” that just hit the airwaves on May 24. The record will be a follow-up to Hawthorne’s 2009 debut A Strange Arrangement.
.
–Hollywood Waste Records announced the signing of New Years Day on Thursday. The band, who will be part of Warped Tour this summer, will release a new EP, The Mechanical Heart, on June 21. Singer Ashley Costello said in a press release, “This was a move that felt very natural to us. The incredible people at Hollywood Waste have become like family to our band and we couldn’t be more excited to team up with them. This is just the beginning of something very unique to the music scene and I, for one, am really looking forward to our future together.”

Sasquatch Music Festival: Day Three Recap

Ahh, Day Three. By this time, most festival-goers are seriously doubting their commitment to seeing each of the bands they’d plan to catching, and with good reason. Showers are few and far between, as are well-balanced meals and good nights’ sleep. Alas, the life of a festival-goer is a hearty one, and so they, like us, surge ahead, albeit at roughly half-steam.
.
We began the day, a breezy one, by catching a set from Chicago buzz band Smith Westerns. They were unlucky enough to come on at noon, which by festival time really means 7am. Nonetheless, many rallied to catch tunes from the group’s latest album, Dye It Blonde. A few songs left the crowd feeling somewhat restless (and, let’s be honest… hungover,) but as they began their standout track “Weekend,” the crowd was most definitely singing along.
.
After a self-imposed hydration break (a necessity, really) we headed back to the main stage to catch the tail-end of a set by Fitz and the Tantrums, a band recently embraced by VH1 and NPR, as well as local Seattle radio staple KEXP. While we only caught a few tracks, the crowd was up and groovin’ for their infectious single, “Money Grabber.” Fortunately, the fine folks at Red Laser invited us to a VIP acoustic session later in the afternoon, so we were treated to a full set bursting with enthusiasm, which included a surprisingly awesome cover of The Racontuers’ “Steady As She Goes.” The crowd went nuts.
