Muse/BBC News
.Ever since the Olympics kicked off rumors have been running rampant about which British musicians will be performing in the closing ceremony, which takes place on Sunday evening. In hopes that we can sort out what you can expect from the event here’s a recap of which bands are playing, which ones might be playing and which ones actually are not set to appear.
.Muse – Yes
.Muse, who contributed the song “Survival” to the London Games, confirmed today that they will be performing in the closing ceremony. In fact, the band will perform that song on Sunday night. Drummer Dominic Howard told NME, “I’m happy with the song. It’s a proper Muse song. It’s not something we just did for the Olympics. They sowed a seed by asking us to do some music but then five months went by. We showed them a few songs when they asked us about [playing the] closing ceremony and they loved it. It represented the enormous competition of what the Olympics is.”
.Ed Sheeran – Yes
.Up-and-coming pop star Ed Sheeran has confirmed that he will perform at the closing ceremony, although some of his news regarding the event has been refuted. The musician initially said he’d be playing with rock band The Who, but they’ve since denied this claim. Sheeran said, “If I was to play the closing ceremony, I might be playing with quite a big rock band and I might be playing one of their most famous hits. Might be. And if I was doing that, it would feel quite fun, I think. And it would be quite a moment for me. But that’s if I was doing it.” Sheeran has since clarified that yes, he will be playing, but it’s unclear with whom.
.George Michael – Yes
.George Michael confirmed the news of his performance on Twitter, writing, “Spending most of the next week rehearsing like crazy for the Olympic closing ceremony. Obviously a bit nervous not having played for nearly a year, but rehearsals sounding great so far!”
.Kate Bush – Maybe
.Rumors of an appearance from Kate Bush began to circulate earlier this week when a remix of her track “Running Up That Hill” appeared and then disappeared from Amazon.com. The page on Amazon, which has since been deleted, showed a 2012 remix of the track listed for Sunday to coincide with the closing ceremony. So does that mean she’ll be performing? Might be a long shot.
.One Direction – Maybe
.It has been reported that One Direction will be performing. Some reports note that the boy band will share the stage with Sheeran, although that has yet to be confirmed. A source told The Daily Star, “The main theme of the Olympic closing ceremony will be celebrating the best of British music, so it’s only right that One Direction are opening the show. They are the U.K.’s biggest music export at the moment behind Adele, who is also rumored to be involved in some way. It’s all top secret and the boys aren’t allowed to talk about it but they are thrilled.” Is any of that true? Signs point to yes.
.The Who – Maybe
.The legendary rock band has denied reports that they’re performing however Roger Daltrey recently said the band had recorded a piece of music that is a “fabulous ending for the Olympics.” So your guess is as good as ours.
.Spice Girls – Maybe
.Again, this one is a rumor, but it’s a hefty rumor and seems to have some legs. Member Mel B has fueled the reports about the Spice Girls by posting photos of shoes and designed outfits on Twitter, suggesting that the fivesome will all be wearing them this weekend. Victoria Beckham also posted a photo of a microphone on her own Twitter feed, which, of course, is basically like a confirmation. A U.K. gossip rag also caught the group rehearsing in London this week.
.The Pet Shop Boys – Maybe
.The musicians in The Pet Shop Boys have been photographed coming and going from a London rehearsal space so this one is likely a confirmation.
.Madonna – No
.This one isn’t based on any rumors. We just want to remind Madonna that despite her accent she is not British and will not be part of a celebration of British music.
.Who do you hope performs on Sunday? Did we miss any rumors? Tell us in the comments.
