When singer/songwriter Skylar Grey showed up in L.A. a decade ago, she was plain ol’ Holly Brook, a 17-year-old girl who’d been in a folk duo with her mom growing up in Wisconsin. She quickly wound up broke and hungry until her sweetly delicate voice was featured on Mike Shinoda’s side project Fort Minor’s 2006 hit “Where’d You Go.” She landed a slew of opening tour slots and then released her debut record.

    Megan And Liz
    .
Most 14-year-olds spend their free time playing video games, texting and trying to figure out the opposite sex. Not Megan and Liz, fraternal twins who grew up in a tiny town in Michigan. Instead, they began singing covers of songs and uploading them onto Myspace and then YouTube. Five years later, the duo have transcended the term “YouTube singers,” having released plenty of original songs. In fact, just a few months ago the New York Times proclaimed that with “Bad for Me,” their effervescent pop hit, the two had “graduated” from singing other people’s songs.

Conor Maynard has been called the “British Justin Bieber,” but that’s a pretty lazy comparison. Yes, their rises to fame are similar — Bieber was discovered by R&B superstar Usher on Youtube; Maynard was discovered by R&B superstar Ne-Yo on Youtube — and they’ve both attracted slick celebrity producers. But Maynard seems to have studied at a different school altogether. He’s a former actor, for one, and quips fly out of his mouth every other minute. His music is certainly poppy, but on his debut album Contrast, funk and sexed-up hip hop permeate tracks like “Can’t Say No” and stretchy electro synths dominate songs like “Animal.”

Maynard might have captured the adoration of girls in the UK, but he’s still able to move around freely in the U.S. without inciting riots. Get to know him here first before that changes — which it will, and soon.

If you’ve ever met a band from Australia … you know that bands from Australia are fun. Gold Fields are no exception. The guys in the band – who are Mark Robert Fulller (vocals), Vin Adanar (guitar/vocals), Rob Clifton (keys, percussion), Ryan D’Sylva (drums) and Luke Peldys (bass) – are ready to drink, ready to play ball, ready to eat weird food and ready to never share a bed together again. Their music – with it’s fun, pop-rock-dance-move-your-ass vibe – has a readiness to it too. It’s ready to go and ready to take you there. And it makes you feel pretty damn good to listen to.
