PINECONE Pinecone detests indie music and the mere thought that his music might be considered indie. “Yes I am independent in the sense that I do everything on my own … so what?,” sniffs Pinecone as he drags thoughtfully on his clove cigarette, “but that is about as relevant to my music as the kind of car I drive. My music is timeless and colossal. I refuse to be labeled or placed in silly boxes.” When asked if there are other artists he should be associated with he cites Elvis Presley, Madonna, Prince and the Beatl es. “Not in style because my style is my own, but in terms of importance,” he is quick to add. As a Laotian refugee, Pinecone came to this country at the age of 3 and was adopted by an eccentric vacuum cleaner heiress who sent him to the one of the finest and most exclusive boarding schools in Switzerland. He studied kinesiology, gamelan and Noh playwriting at the prestigious Keio Institute in Japan. “I truly am a child of the world,” explains Pinecone. Though Pinecone’s debut album, a brilliant collection of found sounds, electro-trash redux, loungecore and neo-no-wave pop might sound lo-fi and tossed off to the untrained ear, but he insists the recording process is harrowing and often painful. “I am meticulous about vibrations,” he explains. “Each song is a symphony of vibration. I am operating on a higher plane than boring concerns like pitch and time that seem to bother other musicians. My vibrations are meta-musical and more about outer.” Combining his skills as luthier, metallurgist and computer programmer, Pinecone is able to create his own instruments to find the perfect sounds. “My recording sessions are somewhat like those Beatles sessions when electrical engineers in white lab coats came in with newly-created groundbreaking gadgets to compliment the musical genius of the performers. The only difference is that I am both that genius in the lab-coat and the world-dominating rock star.” Pinecone doesn’t allow anyone else to interfere in the recording process which he considers “a holy sacrament.” When asked what his main influences are he says “Transcendental Meditation, Nietzsche, Polish poster art and ramen.”
